Good Health is Our Business

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Acupuncture was the first modality to gain acceptance in the United States, however, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Herbal Medicine is equally important.  Herbs have been used for over 5,000 years, and even today modern science is finding Chinese herbal formulas effective.  Their popularity and usage has increased throughout the world.

What Kinds of Illnesses Can Chinese Herbal Medicine Treat?

Chinese herbs are effective for most illnesses – similar to acupuncture (refer to the  “Acupuncture” page for more information).  In many instances, illnesses respond best if both acupuncture and herbs are utilized, however, sometimes one or the other will be the main treatment modality.

What is the Difference Between Western Herbology and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine (TCHM)?

Western herbalism uses primarily single herbs or groups of herbs to treat one symptom.  Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) formulas include between six to twenty herbs.  These formulas are constructed to include herbs that address the main symptoms, but in addition, they re-harmonize the whole body to treat the entire disease pattern.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

When Chinese herbs are recommended by a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, the beneficial effects are usually noticed within a few days – more gradually than pharmaceutical drugs and with far fewer side effects.

Is it OK to Take Herbs at the Same Time as Pharmaceutical Drugs?

In many instances it is OK to take herbs and pharmaceutical drugs the same day, however, it is best to allow a couple of hours in between the herbs and drugs so that each can have time to work in the system and provide the full benefit.  Please keep in mind that as more herbs are used, the risk of drug/herb interactions and complications are increased.  Be sure to discuss any medications you are taking with both your doctor and herbalist.
