Electricity & Natural Gas
-Replace light bulbs with energy efficient spiral or LED bulbs
(for
recycling spiral bulbs contact:
http://www.aircycle.com/resources/state-regulations/ut.aspx)
-Turn off lights when leaving a room or install a motion sensor
-Adjust the thermostat down in winter up in summer when you’re away for more
than two hours
(no sense in heating or cooling an empty house)
-Close blinds during the day on South facing windows in the summer – less
heat and light enters the home, therefore less energy is used on coolers &
central air
-Open South facing blinds during winter days to take advantage of passive
solar light and heat
-Unplug chargers for cell phones and other or appliances not being used (coffee
pots, toasters, hair dryers, shavers)
-Plug electronics like TVs, VCR’s, Stereo’s into a power strip to turn off
when the items are not in use
(remote
controlled electronics use up to 40% of electricity in standby mode as in
‘on’ operation)
-Insulate wall electrical outlets and light switches with foam pads to
prevent unwanted heat/cold air exchange
-Inspect exterior walls, doors & windows for cracks or holes. Fill them with
caulk or foam insulation to prevent air flow
-Turn off the “dry” cycle on dishwasher & open door for dishes to air dry at
end of cycle
-Hang clothes to dry instead of using dryer in summer months
(save $$
energy and pollution)
-Wash Full loads ONLY
(it takes the same amount of
energy to wash a large load as it does a small load)
-Turn water heater
down so water heats only to 120-130 degrees
(hot water is
only used an average of 1-2 hours/day, but heated for 24 hours)
or
install a tankless water heater
