Easy Tips to: Save Money, Save Energy, Reduce Waste and Pollution…

From the Comfort of Your Home.

   Electricity & Natural Gas

-Replace light bulbs with energy efficient spiral or LED bulbs
(for recycling spiral bulbs contact: http://www.aircycle.com/resources/state-regulations/ut.aspx)

-Turn off lights when leaving a room or install a motion sensor

-Adjust the thermostat down in winter up in summer when you’re away for more than two hours (no sense in heating or cooling an empty house)

-Close blinds during the day on South facing windows in the summer – less heat and light enters the home, therefore less energy is used on coolers & central air

-Open South facing blinds during winter days to take advantage of passive solar light and heat

-Unplug chargers for cell phones and other or appliances not being used (coffee pots, toasters, hair dryers, shavers)

-Plug electronics like TVs, VCR’s, Stereo’s into a power strip to turn off when the items are not in use (remote controlled electronics use up to 40% of electricity in standby mode as in ‘on’ operation)

-Insulate wall electrical outlets and light switches with foam pads to prevent unwanted heat/cold air exchange

-Inspect exterior walls, doors & windows for cracks or holes. Fill them with caulk or foam insulation to prevent air flow

-Turn off the “dry” cycle on dishwasher & open door for dishes to air dry at end of cycle

-Hang clothes to dry instead of using dryer in summer months (save $$ energy and pollution)

-Wash Full loads ONLY (it takes the same amount of energy to wash a large load as it does a small load)

-Turn water heater down so water heats only to 120-130 degrees (hot water is only used an average of 1-2 hours/day, but heated for 24 hours) or install a tankless water heater

     Water

-Install Low Flow showerheads & water saving inserts to faucets

-Limit showers to 10 minutes

-Place 1-2, 2 liter plastic bottles filled with H2O in older toilets to reduce H2O used for each flush (or  install a new toilet using 1.6 gal/flush which is now the average standard)

-Slow the Flow of water from taps

-Turn water off when brushing teeth

    landscape

-Use ‘Low Flow’ Sprinkler heads to water lawn and landscape

-Replace areas of lawn with water wise landscape & plants

-Use drip emitters for shrubs & in plant beds to reduce water use & to reduce weeds, while supplying water directly to your plants, lessening plant stress by eliminating competition with weeds for water

-Water at dusk or dawn to reduce evaporation of water

-Choose plants appropriate for your climate that are: drought tolerant &/or food bearing (such as berry bushes, fruit trees or garden plants)

-Consider a vegetable garden or a ‘square foot’ garden for your own fresh produce

-Install solar lights in landscape (Use them inside during power outages)

   Non-toxic products

-Choose Human, Animal & Environmentally Friendly household and yard products. www.greenerpenny.com

Avoid buying and using plastic drink containers (90% end up in the landfill)

-Avoid buying or storing harsh or toxic chemicals (i.e. drain cleaners are toxic and hard on plumbing. Pesticides seep into ground water and are now found even in nursing mothers breast milk)

   recycle

-Use cloth bags when shopping

-Recycle plastic, aluminum, paper/cardboard and glass

-Compost grass clippings, leaves and kitchen waste

-Donate clothes to charities

-Buy products partially made with recycled materials

-Reduce your Carbon Footprint learn more: www.nature.org/initiatives/climatechange/calculator/?src=l12
